Staying focused on your Focus

By: LaTasha West
Innovation, Strategy and Success Consultant

If you are anything like me or like most creative minds you have at minimum 10 new ideas a week. The super hero in you tells you that you can do each and every idea that comes into your head, but I have to share a secret with you. That’s not the best idea.

Trying to do too many projects at once can cause you to be overwhelmed and you may get burned out. Believe me when I say I know, I have found myself working like a mouse on a wheel trying to get 6 projects launched at basically the same time. It was terrible and quite honestly I was working, working, working and getting nowhere. You have to decide what to work on now and which brilliant ideas to put in your “future folder”. The future folder is your friend, use it.

How do you decide where to put your focus? I’m glad you asked. This depends on your long term goal. For example if your goal is to make money soon, then you want to work on the project that is most likely to bring in revenue quickly.

Once you have set your BIG goal then you should tackle it one piece at a time. Take your BIG GOAL , break it into medium goals, break those in to small goals and then break those into micro goals. By doing this you will reduce your chances of being overwhelmed and loosing focus or giving up all together. This helps you FOCUS on your FOCUS.

Your focus plan may look something like this.

BIG GOAL: Host graduation party June 6th

Medium Goals: Find venue, caterer, and DJ and book them by May 1st

Small Goals: Call 4 venues for pricing and availability by Thursday

Micro Goals: Monday make a list of 10 possible venues, caterers and DJs

Make sense? By breaking each task down, into smaller quantified goals with a due date you now have focus. As you complete your micro goals, you are now set up to complete your small goals and so on.

Now you try!

Are you doing too much?

Written by guest blogger
Tricia Lynn Logan

I am stuck in a lot of ways today.  I have a post that is due Thursday. It is funny when you are the owner of 5 active blogs, I should be brewing content out like a coffeemaker, but I am not.  I should be proud of this achievement, but I am not in a way.   The question I have to ask myself often is, am I spread myself too thin?  In fact, everyone who thinks they have too much on their plate, should be asking this question as well.

Here is why I am making this statement.

It has been said that we are a generation of people who multitask.  On second thought, a society, because personally I am in between a baby boomer and a Gen X.  The lines are blurred when you are born in 1964 (July), and you have one group that says you are a baby boomer, but yet, you are a Generation X.  Anyway, the trend of multitasking is not going away soon, and it is growing by leaps and bounds.  But, what happens when you have too many things to do?  There are many ways to find out, and I will put two questions to the test…

Take me for example, in addition to writing blogs and other content work, I was until two weeks ago, a rep for two different direct selling companies, and owning a custom scrapbook and greeting card company.  I decided to drop one of the companies for lack of sales and promotion on my part. I am also into affiliate marketing, which is a challenge in itself.  I wonder if having all of this to do in my businesses, while not holding an outside job to help with finances, is helping or hurting.  There needs to be some organization on my part, if I am going to continue to make this work.

So, if you are in business, take a look at it, as well as other things in your life.  First thing you ask, “Is this the right fit for me and what I am trying to in my life to help me and other people in my life?”  The answer should be yes, and you answer should be clear and on how it is helping in your life.  If not, then why are you in business in the first place?  Money should not be the sole purpose for being in the business you are currently in, only part.  There is nothing with being in it for money, but for me, it tends to get stale after a while.  It not hold depth, and you will always find that you want more out of the business.  When I became a rep in the current company, I went into it thinking that I was going to make tons of money.  Here is a fact finding tool that was spoken to me by the owner of the company.  She said one year at the consultant’s convention not to expect to make tons of money in this business, and I did not understand at it at first.  I finally got it 3 years ago.  She also said to put family and God first.  I also make scrapbooks, greeting cards, which I want to help someone make memories and to cheer, celebrate, and encourage people.  Writing does the same thing. It is all about investing in me, my family, and sharing the skills I have to give for the betterment of this country and the world.

If you have decide to let go of something, first decide how this will affect your life, such as your income or the people who it helped along the way.  Coming back to me letting go of the one direct selling company, which I joined in October 2013, I looked at how much more commission I was bringing in verses not bringing in.   I also looked at how having the business in the first place affected me.  For that, I had to go back to 2006, when I was with a similar company.   By the way, deciding to add something to your life needs to have the same consideration as deciding to take away something.

Once you have decided, please research your decision.  Research everything.  In my case, it had to do with what my current company’s policy was on adding a new direct selling company.  As long it was a sister company (there are 6 of them), it would not affect my status, but had I joined a company that was not in the family, I would not be able to make the current company’s management status.  I can make management status with my scrapbook company and my freelance writing, because they are not direct selling companies.

Next, tell someone what you plan on doing, as it could affect how things run in their world.  If you have family, they are part of research as well.  See how well your spouse/partner and children react to the idea.  Have a family meeting on the subject, and bring your findings to the table.  If they are on board with it, it is a good fit, but if they have questions, provide the answers or say I do not know. Let give it a trial period.

Even though I do not have anyone to discuss all of my decisions with, I still gave it a trial period.  The company did not work.  I do have some personal (not business-related) projects I did discuss with my parents. They will be my next goals in the next 100 session, and I will mention them at that time.  I am preparing for them as we speak, and I am taking them through this same process.

To recap, you need to re-think about how much you are doing in your life.   There are a couple of questions you need to ask yourself in order to make things work.   Once you decide to add or subtract things from your life, you need to research everything about the task, and have a discussion with family members, if applicable.  Everything needs to be a good fit in your life, your family’s life and your spiritual life.  It is called balance.  Not everything will go smooth, but it be much, much easier to reach your goals and achieve your dreams.

Give yourself some credit

Give yourself credit

Often times we as women under estimate our own worth and our own power. We sell ourselves short and devalue our offerings. We settle for less and sometime we even expect less than what we deserve. This is a limiting behavior and it must stop if you want to take your life and/ or business to the next level.

Do you honestly believe that you are worth pennies instead of dollars? I think not! If this is truly your belief I am here to tell you TODAY to STOP LYING TO YOURSELF!!!!!

You are worth it, you can do it. Whatever IT may be. Everything starts with belief; if you believe it then you can achieve it. If you believe that you should be paid less than the next person that is what you will receive. If you think you are not able to hit your fitness goals, that is what will happen. Stop the negative self-talk and self-sabotage. The mind is powerful; let your mind take you higher.  You can do it, I promise!

Girl give yourself some credit! You are an awesome amazing woman and you better know it! Your gifts, talents and existence are for a reason you better know it!

I challenge you to give yourself permission to do more, achieve more and receive more. Believe that you can and watch it happen!

This is your SPECIFIC action step and CALL TO ACTION

Fitness goals: The next time you work out, set a goal. When you feel like quitting, keep pushing for 2 more minutes, or two more reps. Just do it, tell yourself “I can do this” then do it. Even if you fall a little short of your initial goal for the day make sure that you go at least 2 minutes or 2 reps after you are ready to quit. After that set your IMPROVEMENT GOAL FOR THE NEXT DAY and get back at it.

Professional goals: The next time you set your prices for your product and services push it higher. You are more than likely undervaluing yourself. Whatever the first price is that comes to your mind increase it by 10% and put that out there. What you offer is of quality and value and you should be compensated accordingly.

Surprisingly  the people who see the value in what you offer are willing to pay much more than you think. We pay for what we want, need and find value in. If someone is not willing to pay your price, that person is not who you should be working with. Do not discount yourself for the benefit of someone else. Create a win win…they win and so do you!

That is my challenge to you try it- Go ahead and give yourself some credit. #Beastmode

Tell me how it goes

Living Life Positively

Member spotlight

Nika Corbett

Our featured speaker for this week and member of The Next 100 project Nika will present:

Positive Self-Talk
How you start the day is what sets the pace for the rest of the day.  When you decided to make a commitment to change, you may have to be your own best supporter.  You will have to learn to speak words of motivation to yourself.  You may hear others say things that could be deflating or your own negative self-chatter may try to out talk you as well, but it's up to you to speak words power and motivation to yourself in order to hit your goals.

Are you ready to learn?

A bit about Nika, in her own words

My name is Nika Corbett and I’m known as the Positivity Coach of 30 Days of Positivity. I help women across the country learn how to feel more empowered by teaching positivity in their personal and business life. I teach them how to battle against negative feeling and provide positive teaching methods that will open the door to living a healthier lifestyle. My program will hold you accountable daily with identifying objects of concern and teaching how to overcome negative circumstances. As most people already know our dreams and goals are not attainable unless there is a positive mindset.

I am a mother of 3 beautiful children and the wife to an amazing husband.  The reason why I chose to pursue a mission of positive transformation is because in October of 2012, I was laid off from my job. I was an financial disarray and it took a toll on me emotionally and physically, but before I could begin to wallow in my own self-pity, we received a call from South Carolina indicating my father-in-law passed from pancreatic cancer.  So just when I thought I had a minute to fall into my little hole and question my knowledge, skills, and abilities, I had to immediately be the strong supportive wife while my husband was going through the process of parental loss.  Women in my life has displayed such courage and strength when faced with adversity. Although, my emotional pain was tormenting God gave me strength to be able to remain strong. I supported my husband, but nobody really knew how I was really struggling with anger,  anxiety, and  disappointment.  However, I continued to press through, because I had a business I was running on the side part-time. My hope was to set up the business to run full time, but I realized the business I thought I was going to run was in a deficit. I soon found out that this part time job was just a hobby I was pouring money into. My emotions were in a dark place of a lack of hope.  Not only was I dealing with the present emotions and concerns that I wont be able to provide for my children, I had trouble identifying my own self worth with no income.
I remember my husband saying to me, just pray and ask the Lord what I am suppose to learn and gain from this entire experience. I did exactly that and the Lord revealed to me that this journey is not about me. It’s about encouraging and embracing people who are faced with negative circumstances that overshadows the positive virtues that are constant in one's life.

I started writing a blog to encourage others, but later figured out I was writing my first book “30 Days of Positivity.”  Although, my circumstance did not change much. I realized the secret of success and happiness. I had to find the positive in all this negative instances: though I was no longer employed, I was still blessed with a severance package.
Although my father in law passed, we still have great memories and if I was still employed, I would not have been able to support my husband through the process.  I was able to re-strategize our business that was in deficit and set goals and plans designed to increase revenue in 6 months. Within that time frame the business produced revenue that resulted in a 500% increase for 2013.  We are forecasting to double the revenue in 2014.  The greatest gift is “30 Days of Positivity,” because it teaches how to change negative emotions into positive thoughts and behaviors. I wrote this book to give people purpose when they feel no hope and direction on when there seems to be no course. Your mind is a terrible thing to waste to negative thinking. Choose to be positive everyday and circumstances will work in your favor. Allow your mind to be free and escape the illusion of constant skepticism to a belief of purpose and passion with true positive integrity. A decision to focus on the positive will provide a gateway of freedom for your mind, body and soul.  So live a Purposefully Positive!

It begins with commitment

Today I ran a 5k. This is not monumental as I have run at least 5 of them as well as a 10k already, but today was different. I could not control my tears as my feet pounded the pavement this morning. I am sure I looked like some sort of lunatic crying and running the streets. I couldn't stop crying. I cried because when this year started I could not run a yard, let alone a mile, now I can run 7 miles! This began with a commitment that I made to me. I committed to do it.

The journey was not easy, as I started on January 4, 2014 in the middle of winter. I am in the Midwest and this was a terrible winter! I am extremely thankful for the support that I had on this journey. If not for my aunt Bebe committing to get out there with me even though she is an avid runner, and not for the support of the amazing ladies of Black Girls Run! Columbus I really don't think I would have made it. Running was never something that I wanted to do, but the ladies supported, encouraged, challenged and walked the walk with me and I did it! Sending a special thank you to Lori, Chasity, Renee and the ladies of 4th Edition.

My running journey sparked something in me. I felt as if it worked for me it could work for others. This is how The Next 100 was born! God has given me the gift to motivate, inspire and move, with this project I am doing just that. The Next 100 is a community of 100 women working together to achieve 100 goals in 100 days.

I have learned that goals have to be specific, measurable and that they must have a completion date. The Next 100 has that covered. I applaud the ladies who have committed to themselves and I look forward to working with each and everyone to reach her personal goal over The Next 100 days!

This morning I cried, but not sad tears, tears of joy. I cried for you. I am extremely happy that God saw it fit to put me in the lives of women and help them to be the best that they can be. We matter.
